Masoor Dal

Masoor Dal is another Dal variety, which gets cooked so fast and it tastes great when made as dal. I tried this Masoor dal, starting off with simple south indian dal recipe using tomatoes and green chillies. it can also be cooked adding garam masala to it. there is also a recipe for masoor dal briyani, which i got to try soon.
The colour of the dal is in peech or pink and orange mixed colour. but when cooked it just looked like our normal split yellow moong dal.

Ingredients:

 Tomato                                                                                           1
line
 Green Chilli's                                                                    2 slitted vertically
line
 Mustard                                                                                      1/2 spoon
line
Masoor Dal                                         1/4 cup(pressure cooked and mashed)
line
 Garlic                                                                                  2 cloves(sliced)
line
 Curry leaves                                                                                       8
line
 Corriander leaves                                                                         to garnish
line
 Lemon juice                                                                                 2 spoons
line
 Turmeric powder                                                                             a pinch
line

Method:

Cook the Masoor dal upto 4 whistles in the pressure cooker. then in a kadai, leave two spoons of oil, when it gets heated, add mustard seeds, when it crack's, add the Garlic slices, curry leaves and the slitted green chilli's, saute them and add the tomato slices and fry them. Now add salt, turmeric powder, a pinch and mix. add the mashed masoor dal to it and add enough water for the consistency you may require. garnish it with corriander leaves. Add the lemon juice before serving.
It goes well with chapathi and Hot Rice.

It tasted pretty perfect. My hubby liked it a lot..

can anyone tell me...is this healthy taking on daily basis? and why are we not using this masoor dal so much like our other tuvar and moong dal?

I love masoor dal too...but make it minus the garlic. I think masoor dal is more popular in the north as they make variety of dals for roti while in the south, rotis are not as frequently made as in the north..forgive me if i am wrong

i never make masoor dal.. only toor and moong dal and other rajma kali dal etc.. the colour is really nice, and the recipe is very much like the normal dal curry..

Lavi, how pretty your dal looks! This is definitely one of my favorite dishes to make in a hurry-- as you point out, it is wonderful how quickly masoor dal cooks up.

Dhal looks tasty, Taking on everyday basis - u should think about moong dhal (passi payirru)-back in India, doct adviced for Gastric problem.
Why ? : here in US, cost wise Masoor is expensive than thoor dhal! So everyone goes 4 reasonnable Toor dhal packet!
That is what i think and see pratically :)

I am a Bengali and we use masoor dal all the time at home coz its very healthy and nutritious. So I can tell you for sure that this dal you made is definitely good for your family. We Bengalis use masoor dal almost everyday. Its better than moong dal.Toor dal is not very often used by us.So keep having the nutritious massor everyday and enjoy the good taste.
