Vazha Poo/Banana Flower Usili

Ingredients:

  • Banana Flower-1(Chopped finely)
  • Chana dal- 1/4 cup
  • Tuvar Dal-1/4 cup
  • Dry Red chilli-3
  • Asafoetida powder-1/4 tsp
  • Turmeric Powder-1/4 tsp
  • Oil- 2 tbsp
  • Mustard-1/4 tsp
  • Urad dal-1/2 tsp
  • Curry leaves-8
Method:
Soak the Tuvar dal, chana dal and the dry red chilli's for half an hour. then grind it along with salt, asafoetida powder to a coarse consistency. Boil the banana flower's along with turmeric powder and salt. let them cook and drain them and keep it aside.
In a kadai, heat the oil, add mustard, urad dal, curry leaves and asafoetida powder. Now add the grinded coarse paste to the kadai. let the flame be simmer and keep stirring untill the dals form like small ball's. now add the banana flower, mix well and remove from the stove. serve hot with rice. goes well with rasam.
a very unusual bowl..but usual bowl for the florets
I prepared this usili without chopping it finely...it turned out so tasty. you could feel slight bitterness in this flower, but when it is done with dal..it get's levelled.
Banana flower/vazha poo vada is my another favourite snack. check it from dhivya's cuisine.

Nice recipe!

I was thinking of making "Vazhappu Paruppusili" for JFI - Flower power (http://fusion-food.blogspot.com/2008/07/announcing-jfi-august-flower-power.html)

While stir frying the boiled vazhappu , if we sprinkle 1/2 tsp sugar, it will reduce the bitterness.
